This course will prepare child care providers to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and Sudden Unexplained Infant Death (SUID) in family home, group home, and child care center settings by using safe sleep practices recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and Oklahoma child care licensing. It will also help them create a written policy on implementing safe sleep practices in the program that they can share and model with the families they serve.

*This training meets the Oklahoma Child Care Services-Licensing requirement for safe sleep training.

Goals and Objectives

At the end of this training, participants will be able to:
• Define SIDS and SUID and why it is important for child care providers to create a safe sleep environment.
• Identify behaviors that increase the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), Sudden Unexplained Infant Deaths (SUID), and other sleep-related infant deaths.
• Explain common beliefs and misconceptions about SIDS.
• List safe sleep practices and implement in the child care program.
• Promote the Safe to Sleep message to families in child care program by modeling safe sleep practices.
• Inform families in written form of safe sleep policies being implemented in child care program.
